Uncovering the Story of Sam Nordquist
Sam Nordquist, a 24-year-old transgender man from Minnesota, was subjected to over a month of severe physical and psychological abuse before his death.
When I reported on this story, the charges were second-degree murder, but then a grand jury indictment later revealed that all seven suspects were charged with first-degree murder, the most serious charge under New York law. Prosecutors emphasized the severity of the case, focusing on the extreme cruelty rather than categorizing it as a hate crime based on Nordquist's gender.
Tax Justice Rally Package
On April 15, 2025, a Tax Justice Rally occurred in Syracuse, New York, at the Federal Building on Clinton Street. Organized by local advocacy groups, the event aimed to raise awareness about economic inequality and advocate for a more equitable tax system. Participants highlighted issues such as the disproportionate tax burdens on low-income communities and the need for tax reforms that prioritize public services over corporate interests. The rally featured speeches from community leaders, activists, and concerned citizens, all calling for systemic changes to ensure that tax policies serve the broader public good.
I-81 Explainer Package
Interstate 81, built in the 1950s, runs directly through the heart of Syracuse, New York. Its construction cut through a historically Black neighborhood, the 15th Ward, displacing residents and contributing to decades of racial and economic segregation.
Today, the elevated viaduct is aging and considered unsafe. After years of debate, New York State plans to tear it down and replace it with a "community grid". A network of surface streets designed to reconnect neighborhoods and boost local access.
Democracy in Action Package
The Democracy in Action (DIA) project at Syracuse University's Newhouse School is a hands-on Election Day initiative where student journalists immerse themselves in real-time reporting. Instead of focusing on candidates or election outcomes, students fan out to polling places across Onondaga County to capture the stories of voters and poll workers. They produce a rich mix of multimedia content—text, audio, video, and photography—that highlights the human side of democracy.

“Hands Off Protest!”
On April 5, 2025, I reported from Forman Park in downtown Syracuse, where over 4,000 individuals gathered for the "Hands Off!" National Day of Action. This local demonstration was part of a nationwide movement opposing recent policy changes under President Donald Trump and Elon Musk.
The protest attracted a diverse group, including students, professionals, and retirees, all united in their concern over policies affecting healthcare, education, and civil liberties. Many participants expressed a desire for more inclusive and transparent governance. The event remained peaceful, with organizers coordinating closely with local authorities to ensure safety. The significant turnout underscored the community's commitment to advocating for their rights and holding leaders accountable.
